More Bad Luck at VIR

It had been since 2002 that we had finished a race at VIR under full power with the Cobra.  With a difficult off-season in getting the Cobra and pink Porsche together, we had very modest goals for the weekend:  to bring both cars back running and in one piece.  Of course, we hoped to end our string of not finishing under full power.

Mission only partially accomplished.

Bobbie's car ended up with what appears to be a thrown rod bearing which ended her weekend only partially through the Saturday practice.  Dan managed the end the 'official' line of not finishing at full power by going out in the Saturday sprint race and running out of gas on the first lap.  Dan limped back around to get gas and then went back out and did his best o make up some time.  So we did finish under power but not without mishap.

The real emphasis for the weekend was the Charlie Gibson 300.

Charlie Gibson was a long-time friend to racing and especially to VIR.  Whenever we met him he was just the nicest guy and everyone had him on our mind with the first race since his death.  The weekend featured a number of students:  Harry was the instructor for Bill Fitzhugh and Dan was the instructor for new-comer Phylicia Gray who attracted a lot of attention in her leather and high levels as she drove her new #69 Cobra around the track.  Also joining us were friends Doug Lucy (who later served as unofficial crew chief during the race), John Fitzhugh, Will Fitzhugh, and Jeff Major who were driving cars from Marcus Motorsports.  Marcus also had some hot-shot drivers for the race.  The race wasn't for points, but that didn't mean we didn't want to get the season off to a good start.

Harry did just that when he started from the back of the pack (Dan missed qualifying which put Harry near the back).  He had a nice run up the right side until a rookie hit him and sent him on a very long run through the grass in front of the starter stand.  Fortunately everything was fine and he came back on the track and did some of his best driving ever and may have set a new personal best.  Competing against the pro drivers he still kept Team Elam within one lap as he ran the long leg of the race.

When Dan's turn came he pushed down the track running down Cobras and in search of last year's class winner who he passed.  But then he was black flagged for the left muffler coming loose.  During the 25 Hours of Thunderhill we had used wire to hold the muffler up and when Dan came into the pits it was a mad dash to the trailer to get some wire.  Harry and Doug made repairs and got Dan back out.  Dan emerged on track right beside another Cobra - the class leader and then raced away trying to regain a little bit of time and see what we could do.  About a half hour from the end though, the car just cut off.  Most likely it was an electrical problem that caused the car to die.

So we did bring both cars back.  The Porsche will likely need a new engine the Cobra just needs a little TLC.  We drove well and the Cobra performed well, but that is about the extent of the silver lining.  It's six weeks until we go to Mid-Ohio.  Plenty of time to get things sorted and begin running up front again.

(BTW, we took very few pictures this weekend because of the schedule.  Virtually all of these pictures are courtesy of Finish Line Productions and Doug Lucy.  It was very nice of them to share them with us.)
